Tips and tricks from our Trainline team blog

We love helping our customers find inspiration for their next train journey. We also believe about taking those journeys and sharing our experiences with you, so you can sit back, relax and get the most out of your trip.

Non-stop airport transfer to Fiumicino

I’m lucky to have visited Rome on two occasions and this time opted to take the train back to the airport. Having stayed near the Trevi Fountain and spent three days exploring as much of the city as possible, the convenience of jumping on a train at Roma Termini from the city centre made it a no-brainer. Taking the train gave us just that little bit extra time to enjoy our trip even more.

The departure platforms are set at Roma Termini so head for platforms 23 and 24. You’ll find these platforms near the Lavazza coffee shop or Coin; a large department store just in case you need to grab anything on your way through. The nearest street entrance to the platforms is Via Giolitti or if you come in from Pizza dei Cinquecento, head to the right of the station.

There are no seat reservations but plenty of trains running throughout the day. Trains run every 15 minutes during peak hours with ample seating. We had no trouble grabbing a pair of seats by the window (highly recommended and more on that in a bit) and throughout the carriage there is storage for all your luggage and cases. Before you get to the airport take the opportunity to charge your devices, seats all have power sockets.

Now, I do recommend grabbing a window seat. If you sit on the right-hand side, you can take advantage of the huge windows for one last look at Rome as you head out. On the right-hand side, you’ll see the domed roof of St. Peter's Basilica on the horizon over at Vatican City. Fun fact for you and you may have already missed it on your trip but, did you know Vatican City is home to the world’s smallest national railway at 0.42 miles?

At a fixed price of €14 the Leonardo Express is good value and only it takes 32 minutes to get from the city centre to the airport. As a bonus, you arrive within the terminal and from there it’s only a five-minute walk to check-in.

Richard, a Trainline employee, chose to share their experience of the journey between Roma Termini and Rome Fiumicino Airport.
