Returning to Florence after a day trip to Pisa on a Trenitalia Intercity train – June 2023

Getting to Pisa Centrale station

We’d spent the morning visiting the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and to get back to the station, we bought a €1.50 one-way bus ticket from a local shop. It was a 10-minute journey, and we hopped off the bus just before the station so we could look at the Tuttomondo mural by Keith Haring, on one of the walls of the nearby Sant'Antonio Abate church.

Keith Haring Tuttomondo mural in Pisa

From here it was a 5-minute walk to the station, and then straight up onto the platform to wait for our train as we already had our train tickets.

On board the Intercity train

As the train pulled into the platform, we were excited to see it was another double decker (the novelty hadn’t worn off from the journey to Pisa earlier in the day), so we found seats on the top level. There were four of us, so we found a group of four seats together, the seats were leather and quite comfortable, and there was air-conditioning which we appreciated as it was very hot that day! Apart from that, the Intercity didn’t have too many other amenities, but we didn’t really need anything else for the trip back home. There were screens that told us about the stops along the way and the timings of the journey, and announcements were in Italian and then English which was very helpful.

During the journey, ticket inspectors came round to check everyone’s tickets. As ours were digital, we didn’t need to validate them. But a few other tourists with paper tickets had forgotten to do this on the platform before boarding the train (it wasn’t very obvious) – luckily the train staff were feeling generous and didn’t give them the €60 fine, but definitely worth having a digital ticket to save yourself this hassle.

Arriving at Florence Santa Maria Novella station

The train arrived around 10-minutes late into Florence, and from there we took a quick 10-minute walk to the nearby Mercato Centrale Firenze – a really cool food market – to grab some late lunch.

I would definitely recommend travelling by train between Pisa and Florence - the journey was comfortable, quick, and easy!
