Frequent trains make the Turin to Milan route one of the most travelled routes in Italy

For this journey, I took one of the 38 high-speed Frecciarossa trains that run daily between Turin and Milan.

Departing from Torino Porta Nuova

Torino Porta Nuova train station is in the city centre. You can easily get there by taking either the tube – the stop is called “Porta Nuova” and it’s on the Fermi - Lingotto line – or trams n.4, 7 or 9 which stop right outside the train station.

As I arrived quite early, I decided to go to the Feltrinelli bookshop, located on the ground floor close to the platforms. If you don’t really enjoy reading, you can find more than 40 other shops in the station’s new shopping centre.

Connect to the “Free WiFi TorinoPN” network and you’ll have free Internet access for 15 minutes inside the station. Alternatively, with the Around Station app, you can have free and unlimited WiFi, but you need to download the app and sign up to connect.

Like the main Italian train stations, Torino Porta Nuova has security gates where you need to show your train ticket to make sure it’s valid for the train you’re taking. The gates are at the end of the covered atrium. I suggest you go through them as soon as your platform number appears on the departure information display to avoid missing your train – queues can be quite long during peak times in the morning and in the evening, especially when a Frecciarossa train bound for Milan is about to depart.

On the Frecciarossa train bound for Milan

Since the journey is quite short, I decided to save money and buy a Super Economy ticket to travel in Standard Class, where I found comfortable seats and enough legroom. The onboard WiFi worked quite well and allowed me to access Le Frecce Portal, where you can watch movies and TV shows as well as read national newspapers and magazines. You should definitely sit on the left-hand side of the train – a breath-taking view of the Alps surrounding Turin is waiting for you!

Arriving at Milano Centrale

I reached Milano Centrale in just over 40 minutes and at a maximum speed of 289 km/h. Once past the exit gates, I found myself in a huge atrium with vaulted ceilings and plenty of shops and bars. To get to the underground, I used the moving walkway at the side of the atrium and followed the signs. The tube stop is called Centrale and is served by the M2 (green) and M3 (yellow) lines on which you can reach the city centre in just a few minutes. Alternatively, you can take one of the taxis you’ll find outside next to the bus stops for Orio al Serio and Linate airports.

The journey

My journey on the Frecciarossa was very comfortable. I was surprised the train hardly made any sound even when increasing its speed. As the journey is quite short and many different offers are available for this route, Milan is the perfect destination for a day trip from Turin. A journey you shouldn’t miss.
