Venezia Mestre train station

Venezia Mestre train station sits on the mainland, directly across the channel from Venice. Its close proximity to tourist hotspots means that 85,000 people travel through the station every day, using the 400 trains that pass by. With 13 platforms, visitors will find many connections to cities across Italy, especially because Venezia Mestre train station is the main hub of the Venetian capital. It is located on the Milan-Venice line, as well as the Venice-Udine, Venice-Trieste, and Trento-Adria-Mestre. Trains run day and night with Intercity, regional and national routes. A speedy 10-minute connection will take passengers to the island station of Venezia Santa Lucia, where the historic centre lies. Milan-Venice takes roughly 2h15mins, whilst travelling from nearby Padua only takes 15 minutes, and the journey from Treviso is just 20 minutes. To reach Venice Marco Polo Airport, shuttle buses run regularly from early morning until 10pm, and they take around 20 minutes each.

Main attractions near Venezia Mestre train station

Although best known as the mainland of Venice, Mestre is also a pleasant area to visit in its own right, with attractions lying conveniently within walking distance from the station, which itself is only around 2 km away from the centre. After arriving, a walk along Via Piave will lead to the centre, or to Piazza Ferretto after 20 minutes. The Duomo di San Lorenzo, with its neoclassical style, has sat proudly in this square since it was built in the late 18th century. Statutes can be seen perched along its roof, looking out at passersby. In the same square, visitors will also find the clock tower, which is one of the city’s most striking monuments. The bell and tower mark the north entrance to the square and serve as a reminder that the old walled city once stood here. 24 metre tall, the 12th-century, orange-brick, battlemented tower has been lovingly restored.

On the other hand, Mestre is quite modern, with plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars to enjoy. Visitors will also find that the central Piazza Ferretto is good place to stop for refreshments. Mestre, like the rest of Venice, has many traditional taverns so tourists can enjoy tasting regional dishes like risotto with cuttlefish, sardines in sauce, rice and peas (often accompanied with strawberries as a salute to the colours of the Italian flag), fried liver, razor clams and grilled eel. Anyone wanting to sample some fine wine along with their meal can opt for local favourites like Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Tocai or Prosecco. Cheers!
