Stuttgart train station

Stuttgart train station, with its rotating Mercedes-Benz symbol atop a 56-metre tower, is one of the city’s emblematic buildings. The large, historic and industrial-like establishment has a sandstone, tuff, brick and wood interior. Around 300,000 people use the station daily from all across Europe. Germany’s high-speed ICE trains serve national and international routes. Direct services from Berlin can take as little as 5h33mins, although the average time is 6h07mins. From the north, ICE services connect Hamburg, Hanover, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. The train journey from Paris takes just 3h11mins on the Paris-Strasbourg-Karlsruhe-Stuttgart line. With Eurostar, the shortest journey time from London is 6h33mins, and Vienna-Stuttgart requires roughly the same amount of time. Slower trains also run through the station, connecting the regional capital with surrounding towns. The S2 and S3 S-Bahn trains leave the station for Stuttgart Airport, taking 27 minutes. The U1, U11 and U15 U-Bahn services all go into the city centre.

Main attractions near Stuttgart train station

The capital of Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart blends its rich historic heritage with a modern identity, as one of Germany’s industrial powerhouses. As the home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche manufacturers, the city mixes sharp suits and slickness with stately majesty and a rustic charm. The walk from Stuttgart train station to the centre is a pleasure, with the 600-year-old palace gardens visible just a few minutes away from the station and leading to the centre’s main attractions.

From here, the Staatstheater, dating back to 1912, is just a 5-minute walk away, and its elegant rounded and columned facade reflects in the waters of the lake. Continuing through the gardens, the Neues Schloss (New Palace) is just over a 10-minute stroll from the station. This 18th-century Baroque palace, and the immense square surrounding it, is the heart of the city, and a regal centre point for the modern buzz of Stuttgart. Visitors can continue heading in the same direction south to come across the Altes Schloss (Old Palace), a beautiful castle-like edifice that’s now home to the Wurttembergisches Landesmuseum, which is the main historical museum of the region.

Venturing inside the grand building at Markthalle, visitors can pick up some local delicacies or sit in one of the balcony restaurants and sample some Swabian cuisine, such as Flädlesuppe (meat broth with pancakes), Maultaschen (pasta) or Kässpätzle (egg noddles). Stuttgart is a cultural centre and university city, with the nightlife to match. So, traditional German pubs, mellow late-night cafes and thumping clubs can all be found here. The area around Steinstrasse, close to market, is a popular area in the evenings, and under a 20-minute walk from the station.
