Roma Tiburtina station

Roma Tiburtina station is located to the east of the city and has 21 interlinked railway lines. Not only is it the second most important railway station in the capital (after Termini), but it is also a major national and international hub. With the implementation of the high-speed line operated by Trenitalia and Italo, which links Northern and Southern Italy, the station recently underwent major renovations and was re-opened in 2011. The underlying concept is that of a 'bridge station', and the station boasts two main halls, joined by a huge crystal gallery suspended above the last platform level.

You can directly access LINE B (Tiburtina stop) on the Rome underground from the station. Several buses to the city centre and other areas of Rome (such as Pietralata, Tiburtino and Casal Bertone), but also several nearby destinations, stop near the station. Main destinations from Roma Tiburtina include Fiumicino airport, in 47 minutes with 62 trains a day, Milano Centrale in 2 hrs 52 mins, Florence in 1 hr 21 mins and Naples in 1 hr 8 mins. An interesting fact: in 1921 the body of the Milite Ignoto (unknown soldier) reached its final destination at this station after travelling along the Aquileia-Roma line.

Main sights near the station of Rome Tiburtina

Not far from Rome Tiburtina station is the San Lorenzo district, which owes its name to the Basilica of San Lorenzo al Verano (or 'outside the walls'): ten minutes by bus will get you to what is considered one of the most lively and characteristic areas of the capital. Thanks to the presence of La Sapienza University, San Lorenzo is nowadays a young and lively district, which has lost the popular reputation it gained in the post-war period when artists, writers, intellectuals and filmmakers lived in the area. San Lorenzo is one of the seven basilicas of Rome and houses the tombs of five Popes and that of the statesman Alcide De Gasperi. The original building dates back to the fourth century; it was commissioned by Emperor Constantine I and was built right next to the tomb of Lorenzo the martyr.

The current main body of the building was completed in the 13th century; several works were carried out over the centuries until it was partially reconstructed after the bombings in the Second World War. In the same area, we find the monumental cemetery of Verano, from the Napoleonic era, a sort of open-air museum where many famous people are buried. A place of inestimable historic value for the city, where, among others, Vittorio Gassman, the members of the De Filippo family, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Trilussa, Palmiro Togliatti and Nilde Iotti, Alberto Sordi, Roberto Rossellini, Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio De Sica, Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli and many other historical figures of Rome and Italy have been laid to rest.
