Lucca train station

Lucca train station is located just outside the city walls, on the southern side, around a 5-minute walk from the historic city centre. The picturesque facade of the station is characterised by its double row of arches. It was opened back in 1846 and around 200 trains use the six platforms here each day, with trains running regional services. The station forms part of the Florence-Viareggio line, as well as being a junction for lines from Pisa and Aulla. Popular services include those from Florence, with a journey time of 1h20mins, whilst Pisa-Lucca can be travelled in less than 30 minutes. The station is served by buses, as well as taxis, making it easy to get around the city. Passengers wanting to transfer to Pisa Airport by bus will find services from outside the station, and this journey takes up to 1h20mins.

Main attractions near Lucca train station

Lucca train station’s location makes for happy feet because it’s just a few minutes away from the city’s main attractions, which can be explored on foot. The closest of these is only a 4-minute walk away, and it’s called Piazzale Risorgimento. The bronze equestrian monument is the handiwork of sculptor Alfredo Angeloni and it has been on its sandstone pedestal facing the city walls since 1930. From here, visitors will see the boundaries of the inner city, hiding the old town behind its walls. Just beyond is Porta San Pietro, which is a former gatehouse dating back to the 16th century, with a Renaissance design. Not far from here is Teatro del Giglio, the city’s historic theatre and opera house. The neo-classical building was opened in 1818 after replacing the former one which was destroyed in the Napoleonic struggles. Sitting right next door is San Girolamo church, and the lively area surrounding it, along with the nearby Piazza Napoleone, is packed with restaurants, bars and shops. Visitors might stumble upon local markets like the arts and craft market (this city has a long tradition of weaving and lithography) where they can pick up a souvenir.

In the array of restaurants around the historic centre, a selection of local dishes is served. Stave off any hunger with some tortelli (a pasta stuffed with beef and pork), rovelline (Tuscan-style veal escalopes) or roasted cod with chickpeas. For a satisfying sweet treat on the go, grab a buccellato (a type of donut with anise and raisins) or a necci (a crêpe with ricotta and chestnuts)!
