Como San Giovanni train station

Como San Giovanni station is Como’s main train station and it is at the end of the Lecco-Como line, between the Swiss town of Chiasso and the Italian city of Milan. While it’s the biggest station, the town is also served by two others — Como Nord Borghi and Como Nord Lago. Originally opened in 1875 and rebuilt after the second world war, Como San Giovanni is a brick construction and illuminated by large windows. There are four platforms here for local services and longer routes, both within Italy and internationally. Milan-Como, for example, takes 1h30mins, or Turin-Como takes 2 hours. If travelling from Switzerland, the train from Zurich lasts around 2h45mins. Given that the station is located close to the town centre, it’s possible to walk there in 10 minutes. Taxis are also available outside, and there is a bus station to take passengers into the centre or further afield too.

Main attractions near Como San Giovanni train station

A 10-minute walk from Como San Giovanni train station takes visitors to the heart of the historic centre and Piazza Duomo. Dating back to the 14th century, it boasts a marvellous ornate interior and a painted dome ceiling. Whilst here, visitors should head to neighbouring Teatro Sociale di Como. This notable opera house with a neoclassical facade has hosted many grand events throughout the centuries. The cultural journey continues at Paolo Giovio, which is comparable to a treasure trove, housing an archaeological museum, a historical museum and the Giuseppe Garibaldi art gallery. A further 10-minute stroll sees visitors arrive at the promenade with breathtaking panoramic views that take in the Alpine foothills overlooking the water. Just a couple of minutes on foot along the shoreline is the famous science museum, Tempio Voltiano, which is dedicated to Alessandro Volta, who invented the electrical battery.

From Como San Giovanni train station, a walk to the old town will provide the opportunity to taste the culinary delights of Como. With the peaceful lakeside setting of this town, it’s no wonder that fish takes pride of place on the menu, with a range of freshwater fish (complete with an Italian twist) being served. Try local dishes like fish fillet risotto, fried bleak or missoltini (dried lake fish). Those who are not fans of fish don’t need to worry though, because there are many other regional favourites on offer too, including cheeses like semuda and zincarlin, accompanied by the typical polenta board.
