Lake Como Train Station

The city of Como is served by two railway lines, Trenitalia and Trenord. Thanks to an efficient railway network, you can easily travel to Lake Como from other main cities in Lombardy, like Milan, Bergamo or Mantua, and nearby Switzerland as well. The main station of the city is Como San Giovanni, the end of the Lecco-Como line. Como San Giovanni lies between the Swiss town of Chiasso and the Italian city of Milan and is the arrival point for trains coming from Milan Central and Milan Porta Garibaldi. The town also features other stations, such as Como Nord Lago, Como Nord Borghi and Como Nord Camerlata, all of which are served by regional trains. The journey from Milan to Lake Como train station will last about 1h 30m, while from Zurich you can reach Como in 2h 45m. You can easily reach the cities of Lecco (1 hour), Monza (45mins) and Lugano (30 mins).

Getting around Como on local transport

Buses/Coaches: bus services in Como are run by ASF Autolinee, the urban and suburban transport service in Como and the rest of the province. The ASF also connects Como to Bellagio, Cernobbio and Tremezzina and other tourist destinations. On the eastern side of the lake, bus services are operated by Linee Lecco.

Funicular: in the city centre, close to the shores, there’s a funicular (or cable car) line that connects Como with the small village of Brunate. The funicular has linked Como and Brunate since 1894 and offers you the unique opportunity to enjoy enchanting views over Lake Como and the Alps. The service is run by ATM, a public company responsible for public transportation in Milan and some surrounding areas, and it’s still the fastest way to travel between the two towns (only 7 minutes). The return ticket costs €5.50.

Taxi: you can easily jump into a taxi directly outside the station. To book a taxi, you can call the official taxi service in Como (+39 031 81 18).

How to get to Lake Como from Milan Central Station

Depending on where you’re travelling from, you can reach Como from multiple stations. If you’re already in Milan, you can reach Lake Como train station from Milano Nord Cadorna (regional rail service) and Milano Centrale (national rail service). Milano Centrale (Milan Central Station) is the most important station in the area of Milan. The direct train from Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni takes 36 minutes to connect the two cities and runs every day between 05:25 and 22:52. The service is run by Trenitalia. Tickets are available from €4.80 if you travel in second class and €7.20 for first-class passengers.

From Milan Malpensa to Lake Como Train Station

If you’re landing at Malpensa, you can get to Como by public transport. The Malpensa Express is an efficient service run by Trenitalia that’ll take you to Saronno station in about 20 minutes, where you’ll be able to change and take the next train to Como Lago. Ticket price for both routes is €9.90 (€7 for the Malpensa Express and €2.90 for the Saronno – Como route).

From Milan Linate to Lake Como Train Station

There’s no direct connection between the airport of Linate and Lake Como. To reach the airport by train, you can take a regional or Intercity train from Como to Milan Centrale and continue on the Linate Shuttle Bus, which can get you to your destination in 25 minutes. Departures are from 06:00, then 06:15 and then every 30 minutes until 20:15. From 21:00 buses depart every 30 minutes until the end of service at 23:00.

From Bergamo Orio al Serio to Lake Como Train Station

From Bergamo Orio al Serio you can reach Como San Giovanni by train. From the airport, you can catch one of the ATP shuttle buses connecting the airport to Bergamo train station in about 15 minutes. From Bergamo train station you can then take the train to Monza and change there for Como, or you can even head to Milan, Lecco or other places of interest from Bergamo station.
