Bremen train station

Bremen train station is a handsome ‘hello’ to those arriving in the capital of the dignified and dynamic free city-state. The station’s red-brick facade, dating back to the 1880s, remains intact with its clock and angel-like figures overlooking and encouraging travellers to catch their train. This is Germany’s oldest and second-largest port city, and it is well-connected to the rest of the country by rail. Super-fast ICE trains put Berlin just 3h00mins away, while Hamburg is 54 minutes away by ICE, and Hannover-Bremen is a journey of 1h16mins. EC services connect Bremen with Basel (in 7h00mins) and Zürich (in 8h15mins), while the journey time from Amsterdam is 4h15mins. The slower (but still fast) IC trains also use this station, with many regional services stopping here and connecting the city centre to peripheral districts. Travellers can hop on the buses or tram line 1 outside the station to get to the city centre and all its sights.

Main attractions near Bremen train station

Situated to the north-east of the city centre, Bremen train station is just a 10-minute stroll from the city’s major attractions. Though stretched out along the banks of the Weser, Bremen’s highlights can easily be explored on foot. The route from the station goes through Am Wall — a tranquil park along the old defence moat with peaceful spots to sit back and relax. Continuing towards the Old Town, it’s another 5 minutes to the UNESCO-protected Marktplatz, which is the heart of the city. Here, the impressive town hall, built in 1405 but with a 17th-century Renaissance facade, combines with its noble neighbour, Bremer Dom (also called St. Peter’s Cathedral), to make the central square a place that demands time and attention. And, the quaint cafes make lingering here all the easier!

For those interested in art and history, there’s plenty to choose from close to the station. The 19th-century Kunsthalle is a light-flooded building containing a large collection of paintings, located within the gardens of Am Wall. Böttcherstraße, a unique project from the 1920s, is an avenue running from the main square to the river, lined with expressionist buildings, packed with museums, galleries and a host of arts and crafts shops. The Roselius-Haus and Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum combine 16th-century architecture, expressionism and works spanning various eras.

Nearby, the maze of cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses of the Schnoor district is one of the most enchanting areas to stop for something to eat or drink, and still just a 20-minute walk from the station!
