Leaving Pisa Centrale train station on foot, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is just steps away. The square is home to the picturesque Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate, a Romanesque-style church that dates back to 1341, complete with its famous rear facade filled by the mural Tuttomondo. This graffiti work by Keith Haring represents world peace, and the 30 colourful characters seen within the mural all convey a different aspect of peace. Heading north of the station, a 10-minute walk brings visitors to the banks of the river Arno. Along the river there are historic buildings, such as the Gothic-style Palazzo Gambacorti, which is now a town hall, and Palazzo Pretorio with its scenic clock tower. From here, cross the Ponte di Mezzo to reach the charming Piazza Garibaldi, which is the gateway to the old town centre and some of the city’s most famous sites. The convenient bus service from Pisa Centrale train station will also allow visitors to reach the magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli in mere minutes. The square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a remarkable cathedral, baptistery, cemetery, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is arguably the city’s most iconic landmark.

The area surrounding Pisa Centrale train station contains many restaurants that offer typical Tuscan dishes, such as bordatino, which is a delicious traditional soup made with vegetables and bacon. Other Tuscan delicacies on offer include a famous porridge-style dish with a meat sauce, called palette. Those with a sweet tooth should make sure to sample a slice of co’bischeri cake, made with cocoa and raisins, or castagnaccio, which is a chestnut cake traditionally served with a glass of sweet white wine.
