Milano Porta Garibaldi train station

Milano Porta Garibaldi train station is in the north of the city, near the port from which it takes its name. Two towering skyscrapers sit on top of the station, which has 20 platforms above ground and another two below. Intercity, regional and long-distance routes are available, including some served by high-speed trains. Turin to Milano Porta Garibaldi takes as little as 1 hour thanks to a high-speed connection, it’s a 50-minute journey from Como, and it takes around 50 minutes travelling from Lecco too. Hopping on a local train from this station, visitors will arrive in the city's main station within 10 minutes. After arriving, passengers will find subway lines (green and lilac) running directly from the station, as well as buses, a tram stop and taxis, to make getting around the city easy. Anyone wanting to transfer to nearby airports (Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio) can use the Malpensa shuttle bus. The city is also served by several other smaller stations including Milano Rogoredo and Milano Lambrate.

Main attractions near Milano Porta Garibaldi train station

When leaving Milano Porta Garibaldi, visitors will encounter an area of the city that has been redeveloped and modernised in recent years. Passengers don’t need to go far to come across the first notable sight. Sitting right alongside the station is the Torre Arcobaleno (Rainbow Tower), a 115-foot water tank that was given a makeover in 1990, when it was covered in over 100,000 brightly-coloured tiles. A 5-minute walk takes visitors to Piazza Gae Aulenti. This modern square, which was created in 2012, was designed by Argentinian architect César Pelli. It features a platform that is raised 10 metres from the road, with three fountains in the centre. Solar panels surround it, supplying power to the three towers located in the square. From here, visitors can admire the skyline, with an impressive view of the Torre UniCredit, which is Milan’s tallest building — a 231-metre tower!

A further 10-minute stroll will lead to the Bosco Verticale (a vertical forest). Modern city life and nature merge together in these two award-winning towers. Reaching 111 metres and 76 metres, they host over 900 trees, as well as 2000 plants and shrubs, on terraces that cover the buildings, creating an enormous green space within an urban environment. Just 5 minutes more on foot sees visitors arrive at Corso Como. This upmarket shopping and dining complex has boutique-style outlets, selling a wide range of fashion, music, design, art, and tasty Italian dishes, of course!
