Koblenz train station

Despite being situated in central Germany, the ancient city of Koblenz feels a little like an island due to its unusual position at a fork where the Rhine and Moselle converge into one river. As the city is one of the oldest in Germany, having once been a Roman settlement, Koblenz train station itself is on a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the south of the city, it is an important rail hub for the entire Rhine-Mosel-Lahn region. Regular IC trains and high-speed ICE routes leave from and come into Koblenz train station, which connects several regional routes within a 200 km radius. For example, a direct train from Frankfurt takes 1h27mins, it is 1h32mins from Cologne, and to reach Koblenz from Düsseldorf takes just 1h18mins. Tourists can even travel from Frankfurt airport in 1h11mins, or direct from Vienna overnight on the EuroNight train. Visitors arriving at the station will find bus links into the city and surrounding area, or they can hop straight onto a 1-minute train to Koblenz Stadtmitte, a smaller station in the city centre.

Main attractions near Koblenz train station

Upon leaving Koblenz train station’s west exit, visitors will immediately see the rich heritage of the city. Looming above the station, the Fort Großfürst Konstantin offers spectacular views over both rivers, the Rhine and the Moselle. Though it can be seen from the station, reaching it involves a 25-minute stroll through the Hauptfriedhof – the city’s main cemetery and a fascinating landscaped garden. Leaving the station through the main concourse, a 10-minute walk north will bring visitors to the old centre. Snaking through the narrow lanes, travellers will come across charming squares, historic monuments, and beautiful architecture. The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is particularly magical and resembles an enchanted castle from a fairy tale.

Still in the city centre, visiting the Görresplatz and nearby Münzplatz, which are about a 20-minute walk from the station, visitors will see gorgeous monuments like the Historiensäule, the Johannes-Müller-Denkmal, and the rose-tinted hues of the Liebfrauenkirche. Down by the Rhine, coloured a majestic misty grey and accompanied by riverside gardens full of fragrant roses, the Kurfürstliches Schloss is a 20-minute walk from the station. From there, strolling up the river for another 15 minutes, travellers will reach the historic Deutsches Eck where the rivers divide – a great area for a picnic and a hotspot for restaurants serving traditional German cuisine. This is also the place to catch a spectacular cable car and ride up to the Festung Ehrenbreitstein.
