Genova Piazza Principe train station

Genova Piazza Principe is the main train station in this colourful port city and, with its central location, it is close to Palazzo del Principe, from which it takes its name. There are around 300 trains passing by the 9 platforms here each day, serving about 66,000 passengers daily. Dating back to the 1850's, it’s a rather ornate structure, adorned with grand columns, statues and a lovely clock. The station is served by regional and high-speed trains, and visitors can arrive from Ventimiglia in 1 hour 50 minutes, or from other major Italian cities like Milan and Turin in around 1 hour 30 minutes. Although the station is already in a good position to visit Genoa city centre, public transport is also readily available, in the form of the metro (with a stop at the station), buses and trolleybuses. This city also has another important train station located a little further out of the centre — Genova Brignole.

Main attractions near Genova Piazza Principe train station

After leaving Genova Piazza Principe train station, it’s a 10-minute walk to the largest aquarium in Italy, which is also the second largest in all of Europe. Acquario di Genova is home to dolphins, manatees and penguins! Moving away from the seafront, it’s a 5-minute stroll to Via San Lorenzo, where the area’s medieval history is evident in the striking buildings lining the street. From here, visitors will see the Duomo di Genova looming over the landscape. It’s a medieval cathedral built in between the 12th and 14th centuries and, inside, visitors will discover the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, which was made to house the remains of the patron saint. Just a couple of minutes from here is Palazzo Ducale. Built in a Venetian-Gothic style, this historical building is now home to a museum, as well as a cultural centre that hosts various events.

Visitors looking for some good Italian cuisine should head to the central areas of Via della Maddalena or Piazza Fossatello, which are both less than a 15-minute walk away from the train station. There are a selection of restaurants and cafes here so tourists can try some local favourites, like panissa (a risotto with beans), fried polenta sticks, and some of the best pesto in Italy, which can be found in pastas, soups and pies. However, pesto isn’t the only sauce that this region of Italy is famous for — salsa verde (made from pine nuts and parsley) is delicious over grilled meat, and salsa di noci (made from walnuts) is the perfect accompaniment to pasta and ravioli!
