Visiting Perugia

Like many cities across Italy, a large selection of Perugia's main tourist attractions can be found in the old town. Fortunately for visitors who have arrived in this city feeling a little weary, the old town is just a 2-minute walk from the central train station. It boasts a network of meandering streets and narrow lanes, which await discovery. The heart of Perugia is Piazza IV Novembre, framed on every side by beautiful Medieval buildings that are typical of this city and its surroundings.  Tourists will find breath-taking pieces of architecture around every corner here (all within 2 or 3 minutes of each other), including the town hall, the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria and the Palazzo del Priori. This stunning square also beholds stunning churches, including Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, as well as the Fontana Maggiore. This centuries-old fountain consists of two marble baths, and it boasts plenty of ornate detail and stature.  Just a short 2-minute stroll away, visitors will come upon the Pozzo Etrusco (Etruscan Well). This historical wonder is a real feat of engineering, with an internal staircase providing access to the deepest points. Alternatively, moving 5 minutes south, visitors will come upon the Rocca Paolina, one of the most ancient fortresses on offer in the city. This Medieval site still boasts many of its original fortifications, while its dungeons should be of great interest to visitors interested in the more macabre side of history!
