Dortmund, the city of the famous Borussia Dortmund football club, is located in the north-west of the country. Local fans, as well as those from further afield in Europe, regularly flock to the city for this reason. Visitors can travel by train to Dortmund from Cologne in 1h46mins, and travelling by train from Dusseldorf takes 1h44mins on the Inter-City service. The main station, Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, is located right in the commercial heart of the city. That means shoppers arriving in Dortmund by train will not have to go far to find all their favourite brands!

Visiting Dortmund

Close to the station, the famous Dortmunder U (or Dortmund U-Tower), which was once a brewery, is now a centre for arts and culture. Amongst other organisations, it houses the Museum Ostwall, a prestigious museum of modern and contemporary art. So, explorers who are both football fans and lovers of art can hop on a train to Dortmund and first drop in at the Fußballmuseum (Football Museum), which is only a 2-minute walk south from the station, and then admire Museum Ostwall’s offerings just a 3-minute walk further on.

Those looking for a beautiful expanse of city park should head for the Westfalenpark, which is a 30-minute stroll south through the city centre. Lakes and greenery can be found here, as well as the popular visitor attraction of the Florianturm — Dortmund’s landmark television tower. Visitors seeking a spectacular view of the city and its surrounding countryside need not climb to the top though! Fortunately, a lift will whisk them up, and the short journey is certainly worthwhile.

When it’s time to take a break from sightseeing and seek refreshment, visitors should head for the Alter Markt. This is a pretty old square only 10 minutes from the station, where there are numerous little bistros and bars to satisfy any cravings. And, thirsty visitors will be pleased to know that Dortmund is Germany's largest beer-producing city, so there will be no shortage of interesting brews to sample!
